I just installed a couple old DOS games under windows XP, and I can't get them to play any sound. I have a soundblaster live with the latest XP drivers, but they don't seem to support the SB16 emulation that older drivers did. Under Device Manager, there's a device called "Legacy Audio Drivers", but it's basically useless, I can't use it to change what IRQ, DMA, etc are emulated.
Also, XP won't let me change which resources are used by the card itself, which is a pain.
Anyone know any more about this, or had luck getting XP to play sound in DOS?

Some may work. You may have to play around with what sound card you pick. There may be sound blaster and/or sound blaster 16 and/or sound blaster clone, etc. Choose IRQ5 and DMA 1 if the game gives you a choice. You may have to try one of the compatibility modes.

What you need is a sound emulator to play DOS based games under win2K/XP. Have a look at the following site :

Uhh yeah if you only want to play for *three minutes*, then the damn thing boots you out! And it's FORTY DOLLARS to register? Whatever...

There is a free DOS-Music emulator available at: http://ntvdm.cjb.net/
I find that it's emulation is excellent...better than SoundFX. One downside though is that it can slow things down.

Thank a lot Kay. VDMSound is exactly what I was looking for. It's great. You just run the install program, right click on the exe file of the game you want to run, and select run with VDMS. No more problems. Thanks.
