getting rid of excess processes

I want to configure my computer to start up without starting a whole bunch of unnecessary programs. How do I set it up to only start the essential programs that are necessary for Windows to run properly? Also, how do I know which programs those are?

Start->Run->msconfig->Startup->
check for each entry in http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
and disable the unnecessary ones.All the Best
