Specs: WindowsXP
I think I corrupted the Registry by trying to change owner name from my actual name to "Owner" in advance of selling the desktop. I can now boot to desktop but nothing else will load. Want to wipe and reinstall off my original DVD. No place in BIOS to 'save' when I switch it to start boot with "CDROM"
--says there is none.???

Hi kalar. The BIOS settings will be unaffected by any OS issues, reg changes etc.
When you say that nothing else loads what do you actually mean, i.e. just desktop background image is displayed and nothing else? Can you ctrl+alt+del to load the task manager etc?
Do you remember the key you altered in the reg, and did you may any other changes as well?

If you just want to reinstall but can't see the CD/DVD drive listed in the boot order within the BIOS I'd check the settings under SATA/IDE devices & just make sure all physical connections are tight to the drive as this could easily be why nothings shown/detected.

You should be booting to the WinXP CD not trying to run it while in Windows.

"You should be booting to the WinXP CD not trying to run it while in Windows."

I couldn't agree more. Funny how people actually think the opposite, I guess that's why we have this forum LOL

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers

I only changed the boot order so my restart would boot from the install original CD ROM.
It would not. And would not give me choice of "repair:.
The same version of WinXP came up to desktop; no background images, none of my styling showed up. Only Icon for recycle bin, and Internet Explorer. When I tried to get Internet Explorer (right clicking on START menu) it took a veerrrry long time and came up. I could see the system had remade names into Myname.Inspiron, Myname2.Inspiron.
Moot point now.
I d/l an iso of DBAN, burned an image and nuked the hdd to oblivion. Will attempt fresh install with origin DVD tomorrow.'
All I'm trying to do is give the system to someone else without any of my personal info on it.
