What's the fastest and or easiest way to find out what ip address is being assigned by the ISP? I'm prettty sure my ISP uses DHCP.

Are you referring to your "public" IP address? If so, try going to:
www.whatismyip.com.

OR - from a command prompt window, type ipconfig /all

Rule #1 Good computers don't go down.
Rule #2 There is no such thing as a good computer.

ipconfig /all would be the fastest way to find out that information....

if you want a new ip address: ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

People, please read the question properly!

The question refers to the IP assigned by the ISP. Being behind a router, or some DSL modems, ipconfig would give the IP address on the local network, NOT the one assigned by the ISP.

As Daniel suggested, go to www.whatismyip.com.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Most systems using DHCP will return an ipconfig/renew with the same address you already have. There is a hardware level code (MAC address) in the network card that is used to match to the IP address when you lease a connection. Typically a lease is for 1-3 days. If you do a renew a new lease for another time period is matched to the MAC address to the IP address.

Typically when troubleshooting a connection problem the release/renew is used to see that the DHCP server supplies an address.

The one thing that using "new at this" suggests is that if your ISP uses dhcp the display will refresh with an IP address string. Note the example below.

C:\>ipconfig /all

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : XXXXX
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . : XXXXXX
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : XXXXXX

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/100 S Desktop Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.XXX.XXX.XXX
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.XXX.XXX.XXX
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.XXX.XXX.XXX
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.XXX.XXX.XXX
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Monday, August 22, 2005 6:37:15 PM
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, August 23, 2005 3:33:07 PM

C:\>

This is a typical ipconfig request result.

Sci-Guy, thank you for directing the responses to my original question.

Daniel, thank you for the link I was hoping to see. There are probably other similar links as well but this one will work just fine.

All replies are appreicated as they at least show that an effort was made. I did try the ipconfig to humor myself before posting here but only received my localized (DHCP) settings as I suspected I would.

Regards!
