Well, thanks, fellas.

Having lop.com come up everytime my browser said "The page cannot be displayed" was annoying, very annoying. I tried the uninstall.exe mentioned above, but it didn't get rid of the problem. I did get rid of it by using "Ad-aware 5". (Search in goolge.com for it, free program). It found many different "reporters" like lop.com. I only used it for getting rid of lop.com and it worked!
Just use a "Quick Scan" and look through the whole list for lop.com. I found about 7 or 8 in my computer, just deleted them and (so far) everything is working fine.
Now when I type in an incorrect URL address, NO MORE LOP.COM!!
Life is good, again.

How can you trust the people that secretly changed your settings, install spyware etc..? They may be doing some kind of nastier thing when (seeming to be) uninstalling.

There must be some other ways to get that url out of my computer.

I don't know how did it work for you. But I downloaded the Ad-aware and scanned for the files, removed them, and when I restarted the computer, the LOP was still there!! How did you do to take it out.

P.D: When I did the scan, the program found a lot of files!! Is it normal that Ad-aware finds so many files?

Lop replaces registry keys that call DLL files - the same dll's that are used when a page cannot be found. Ad-Aware 5.8 is supposed to get rid of it. If not, you'll have to do it manually. If you need any help with that, you can mail me.

I just had the same nightmare myself!!! I tried ad-aware 5.8 and it was stil there - so then we ran the uninstaller lop.com supplied. This got rid of the popup search box that ad-aware did nothing to get rid of (and was driving me potty!!!) Then we ran ad-aware again and it all definitely seemed to be gone. I think the lop people are trying to get around ad-aware.

How to get rid of lop.com if all else fails, most of their settings are contained in the registry. Windows 2000 through XP use the same basic registry keys.

To clean up lop.com use the registry to search for lop.com make sure you highlight the very first registry key and go from there.

I also used adware and did a search, it found nothing, used windows search for lop.com no folder directories. I then manullay edited lop.com out. Got most of the desktop garbage cleaned and fixed the default home page. But everytime I type in the wrong URL it defaults to lop.com

If someone has found this registry key or where this part of the file is located let me know asap.

The free Ad Aware didn't work at all..
I searched the registry for lop and deleted every entry... that didn't work.
Ran msconfig ...It's not listed in the startup menu.
So I went to Novice who replied go to...www.lop.com/uninstall.exe...
That worked...I was running Windows 2k I even trie upgarding to Xp but that didn't work either...Thanx all you guys and gals..
Lop is a virus...and they should be treated as such...How many years did that hacker get...lop should get just as many

I finally got it. First search the registry for any lop.com entries and delete all of them. Do the same with the find files thing.
Restart your computer and search for plg_ie0.dll or just plg_ie0. Delete it. (You have to restart first to unload the .dll file, be sure to delete the dll before running IE as to avoid loading the dll into the memory) then after deleting it, search the registry for plg_ie0 and delete the 5 or so entries in there. That's what did it for me. I didn't try ADWare so I don't know if that works. Aparently it does for some and doesn't for others. So good luck all.

adware 5.82 was fianlly able to get rid of the plg_ie0.dll after 5 restarts of adware. Having looked at the .dll using a dll viewer I was able to determine that the code is trying to get around any anti-spyware and almost succeeded. adware 5.82 donwloaded from this site got the job done, you do have to be persistent. Some of the advice must be followed in the articles above.

How I was able to do it.

Running windows 2k
restarted the computer
deleted desktop.htm did not have desktop.swf
Had already manualy edited the win2k registry which by the way only fixes part of the problem with the windows popup the default webpage etc.
installed adware582 which found 25 more registry files controlled by lop.com most of which were clsids and other ie hex keys.
The last file was a doozer, the plg_ie0.dll fought pretty hard against adware582. On win2k this file is installed under
documents and settings
administrator (if you have one setup if not look under profile logged in as)
application data

or simply do search. sometimes the search did not even find the file even when using *.dll

In the end be persistent with adware582 it will remove that file and all the registry keys

I just wanted to thank those that suggested using both methods of getting rid of the Lop.com annoyance. Using the steps below I was able to get rid of the whole thing only had to reboot once.

--1-- I closed the Lop.com desktop banner.

--2-- I went into my browsers, both netscape and explorer and set my home page back to where **I** had it before Lop changed my mind.

--3-- I used the Windows search feature to search the computer for plg_ie0.dll and then deleted it.

--4-- I manually searched my registry and deleted everything I could find.

--5-- I went into my Windows/Web/Wallpaper folder and deleted these two files:

desktop.htm
desktop.swf

--5 Note-- You may not have both of these files. Just delete what you have. Also, you will most likely have to reset to the wallpaper you had. This should work for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows ME, and Windows XP both versions.

--6-- I went to lavasoft.com and I downloaded the **FREE** version of Ad-ware.

--6a-- I the options to scan everything. The program found several instances where my manual search missed something to do with the Lop.com.

--6b-- Using the Ad-ware program I let it remove anything to do with lop.com.

--6c-- (Note: The program found other lurking programs like gator, etc, which I deleted as well.)

I performed the steps in that order two days ago. Since that time I have rebooted every time I went away from the computer. I only rebooted to be sure that nothing popped back up from somewhere. After each reboot I ran the Ad-ware and it found nothing.

I hope the step-by-step directions help. Good luck!!!!

P.S. To the guy that called people morons... Show a little compassion, most of us have to share our computers with other family members. So perhaps it wasn't one of our fellow-posters that downloaded the program.

P.P.S. I also agree that Lop.com is a virus. Just apply the "duck test." Quack! Quack! Someone needs to file a class-action against that company.

The website is written with the intent to cause damage via way of Malware and Spyware .. both of which are totally illegal by way of a breach of privacy.

I'm ready to contact the Better Business Bureau about these clowns. As the guy stated above, they PURPOSELY write the .dll to get around remove totals. Total BS, this kind of crap needs to get reported by everyone possible so they can shut 'em down.
Contact me if you do. I just ran the uninstall.exe from their page, but I'm still finding some of the crap you all mentioned hanging around my computer. This is plain breach of privacy. And we thought Microsoft was bad..

Just today I had the fun of wasting a whole day being upset and looking for a way to get rid of these idiots! Thanks to this discussion source I downloaded adware. After I ran it I still had to run the "find" "files and folders" and entered lop. The lopsearch was still there but I now was able to finally delete it. What really p----- me off is that the downloads lop.com offers for uninstalling are bogus. The toolbar removal is ok and makes you feel as though you got rid of them. However, when you try the uninstall that they offer it does nothing to remove them . I believe it is just another way to sneak more crap of theirs onto your computer. I was surprised that some of you like lop.com?????? Are you the owner perhaps because anyone who likes them must be associated or doesn't realize how damaging they can be. I don't like being invaded by anything that I didn't bring on. I wish I was a computer pro because I would learn how to put these people in their place by infecting things they care about, it would be so great to get even.

Anyone up for clubbing together to sue Lop.com for the time it takes to get rid of them from our computerss ? This amounts to trespass.

I dont know about you, but I am tired of this crap and if a few of us club together and take the action ourselves, it wont cost more than a few hundred quid.

If we are reasonable with the amount we want to sue for costs and damages, then we should win this.

Once done, we can publish the win which will spur others on, and then maybe these scumbags will think again about infesting our machines with their intrusive spyware.
