Hello, I've just bought a second hand laptop with XP Pro on it. When I power it up it offers two XP Professionals to enter on. How do I get rid of one?

Also, the licence sticker on the bottom is for XP Home so no doubt the XP Pro is pirated. I wouldn't mind borrowing a CD from the local store and going back to XP Home but I am afraid of losing all the drivers etc... how do you back up the existing drivers?

I am an XP "knownothing" so all help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
Tracey

Would be best to purchase a legal oem xp pro cd and do a clean install. As for drivers that a piece of cake. Just about any driver you need is on the internet. It being a dell, the place to start with drivers would be their website.

Hey thanks for the fast response and the link...

Rather than buy an XP pro licence I was hoping to stick with the Home licence, our local computer shop will lend me a Home CD... that way I don't have to pay heaps for a new licence... That's legal isn't?

Will that cause me difficulties?

I myself cant answer that question. I am not in the computer repair buisness as a profession and have always used oem software or store bought software. While I am aware of computer shops having other methods I myself cant answer that question.

hi,
what makes you think your copy is pirated?operating systems get upgraded all the time.the one who originally purchased the laptop could of easily had his own copy of xp pro and installed it.i think if you run windows update it will tell you it cannot update because its not a legal copy.try running windows update see if it will allow you.

yes, you can still upgrade even the winXP is illegal. like my friends do, they are using an illegal WinXP, which is downloaded online. they can still install the SP2 and upgrade the windows everyday, but it asked them to activate the windows in 30 days. and you need a legal winXP cd key for that.

Thanks for the link, per

bitboy - there is a licence sticker on the bottom of the laptop for XP home - that's why I want format the HD and set up a nice clean installation of XP home instead of having a multiple boot of 2 XP Professionals.

The person who sold it to me said to just use the top one but I have no idea what the second one is there for or if it's corrupt and I would rather try to return the laptop back to near "original".
