Good evening,
I just installed the new free version of 'Quick Time'(v7.0.3).
My problem is everytime I use the program it places itself into my Start-up folder at bootup. My M/S Anti-Spyware program alerts me to this fact but I can't find a way to stop it from doing it.
Is there some way to stop it from starting at bootup? I have checked the program inside and out and I can't find the secret.
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Start, Run, type "msconfig", click the startup tab, uncheck "qttask", click apply, than OK. Restart your computer.

Hi hdrisc,
I appreciate the response.
I have already tried your suggestion and it does work ... but ... only until you use Quick Time again. Then the Program puts itself back into the startup folder.
I am looking for a way to safely stop it from loading at 'startup' anytime.
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Programs can run from three places at startup:
1.The Startup groups
(Startup folders or msconfig Startup tab)
2.The "run=" and "load="
lines in the Win.ini file.
3.The Run and RunOnce lines in the registry
(Lots of those)
A Definition of the Run Keys in the Windows XP RegistryMaybe see if it is on the Startup tab in msconfig, so you can uncheck it.
Start,
Run, then typemsconfig
But you did that.

Phi, Go to the link below and scroll down to "Qttask\QTTask.exe where you'll find instuctions.
Eliminate QuickTime from startup

Morning Tufenuf,
Good to hear from you again and thanks for the link.
I understand the instructions until I get to the last step which says: " ... Finally, Disable or Delete this entry on the Startups tab of The Ultimate Troubleshooter...."
To the best of my knowledge (which you know from previous posts isn't very much ...lol)I don't have 'The Ultimate Troubleshooter' on my computer.
Would I get the same results if I would delete 'QTTask.exe' from my startup tab in Msconfig?
Sorry for being such a nitty but just want to make sure I do it right before I 'screw' something up.
I have to get to work now but I will check back in this evening.
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Phil asked, "Would I get the same results if I would delete 'QTTask.exe' from my startup tab in Msconfig?" After you do the following go into msconfig and uncheck it.
In version 7 :
Right-click the turquoise blue “Q” QuickTime icon in the System Tray, and choose “QuickTime Preferences”. Choose the UPDATE tab and uncheck “Check for Updates Automatically”. Next, choose the ADVANCED tab and uncheck “Install QuickTime icon in System Tray”. Click OK.Give it a try and see what happens. There should be no need to buy the Ultimate Troubleshooter Program as below is a link for the Free "CodeStuff Starter" program which basically is the same type program.

hey listen.... use "start up programs remover buddy" by "scorpion software"
it works gr8. evn i faced this problem earlier and i have successfully removed quick time from start up

Hi Tufenuf and karthik_b23,
I will check both programs out. Thanks for the information and the links.
I took a quick look at 'Code Stuff Starter' and it looks like a decent program.
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Hi Tufenuf,
Hope you're still watching this thread because I am still struggling trying to get 'qttask.exe' to stop loading on bootups.
I can uncheck it in 'msconfig' and it will not load again until I use Quick Time but as soon as I have to utilize the Program my M/S Anti Spyware pops up and tells me it is allowing Quicktime to load on startup again. It (M/S Antispyware) doesn't ask me if I want to allow it, it justs does it.
I have followed all the directions you gave in your previous post and have accomplished them all except getting 'qqtask.exe' out of my MSConfig startup folder completely so it can't load on startup.
It is my understanding that getting rid of it will have no effect on the Quicktime program itself, I just won't be able to automatically check for program updates.
I tried to find 'qqtask.exe' in a 'Regedit' search looking in Run- and Run Services - but it doesn't show.
I am stumped as usual. Any ideas (in layman's terms ...lol)how I might be able to pull this off?
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Hi again Tufenuf,
Since my last post I have been doing a little more searching with 'Regedit' and I found 'qttask.exe' in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSConfig\Startupreg\Quick Time Task.
When I left clicked on Quick Time Task I discovered this line in the right pane following the word 'Command': "C:\Program Files\Quick Time\qttask.exe" -atboottime
This is the same way it is listed in my MSConfig startup folder too so I think it is the same 'trouble maker' (putting itself in my 'startup folder anytime I use Quick Time).
Would it be safe to delete this entry without messing up the Quick Time program itself?
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Phi, I'd try following the suggestion in my Response Number 6 above then download & install CodeStuff Starter and under the Startups tab uncheck any references to qttask.exe and see what happens.
Tufenuf

Hi Tufenuf,
Thanks for responding again.
I did as you just suggested and all was well until I went to a site which uses Quick Time to display panoramic photographs.
Once I clicked on one of the photos up popped the M/S AntiSpyware Alert window to tell me it had allowed 'Quick Time' to join my Startup programs.
I am beginning to think this little 'bugger (qttask.exe) is impossible to get out of the startup tab.
I don't mean to add a new subject to this post but in Chuck2's Post #3 he mentioned it could also be listed under the "run=" and "load="
lines in the Win.ini file.Out of curiousity I checked my Win.in listing in MSConfig and it doesn't even list 'run' or 'load'.
I remember I had them in my old Win95 and now I am just curious if I should be seeing them in my Win XP too or if it is normal not to see either one?
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Phi, Check out the instructions in the thread at the link below. Stop the qttask process in Task Manager(Ctrl/Alt/Del) first then rename the qttask.exe to qttask2.exe or qttask.exe.old.
Stop QuickTime from loading at startup
It's worth a try.
Tufenuf

Hi Tufenuf,
BULLSEYE!
Renaming 'qttask.exe' to 'qttask.exe.old' did the trick. I have gone to a couple sites which use Quick Time and fired it up and then rebooted and still have no mention of 'qttask.exe -atboottime' in either MSConfig or Starter.
I really appreciate the tip. It was driving me crazy.
Do you have any thoughts on why the "load=' or 'run=' lines are not listed in my Win.ini file?
Thanks and regards,
Phil
