Hi,
I have a Windows XP Home Edition service pack 2 drive that will not boot. I’ve made it a slave drive and I can access data on it, but I don’t see the Documents and Settings folder. Is there a way to access this folder on a secondary drive like this? I need to get files copied out of My Documents.
Thanks for your help!

I believe that is an xphome file and if you can't boot the OS then it won't be shown. Can you access any of the OS files at all?

You can get to the Docs and Setting folder, if the OS was not password protected. You should see the folder that contains your log-in name, click that and Docs and Settings should be there.
Hope this helps

likelystory,
As far as I can tell, I'm seeing all of the files except the Documents and Settings folder. The Windows folder is still there, will all of the system files in it.
demonking,I did not have a password on my account, but I don't have a folder with my log-in name (I just use Jeff) in it. On my functioning C: drive I have a Documents and Settings folder with a Jeff folder within that.

You could try NTFS Reader maybe that would see it. In order to copy files off of a ntfs drive it has to have a Fat32 drive to put them on.

If you go into that Jeff folder you should find these folders:
cookies
favorites
my documents
desktop
start menu
windowsI just checked inside of mine. It makes no difference how many users you have on it. I have 2 other pc's in the house running XP on them and they both only have single users on them and they are set up the same way yours is. I bet if you open the Jeff folder you will find what you are looking for.
Your XP drive cannot have an NTFS partition on it because if it did you would not be able to access it at all from another drive. I checked that before I set mine up. I kept mine a FAT32 so I could access it from my win98 drive or my backup storage drive if need be.When at first you don't succeed...

They always have the answers...

This may seem strange, but try safe mode. In safe mode there are more premission settings than normal mode. In safe go to the 2nd drive and take ownership.
This applies to XP home only.

Doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result.

You may want to try Get Back Data from runtime.org It is a data recovery tool for either ntfs or fat formats which ever one you use. Worked for me. bluejay
