Somehow I have managed to get this little blue star with my icons. It is prompting me to download some critical security updates for XP. I went to microsoft.com and checked myself and found no updates need. Plus I have it on automatic update. So where did this come from? I went to Add/Remove programs and it's in the list however it doesn't give me an option to remove. There is a link called support information but I don't want to use it. Any suggestions on how to remove it?
It got there because you have Windows Update set to Auto. MS has sent that programming to everyone – I think – but the Blue Star reminder to pay for the software only shows up on units with software that it cannot confirm as valid.
Boot into Safe Mode and go to the System32 folder. Look for the Wgalogo.dll file and you will see the star (now white) – I cannot remember the files name – rename the Wgalogo.dll file and delete the star file. That’ll make it go away.
Tomorrow the Stars!

You mentioned "Windows Genuine Advantage". There is a lot of controversy going around about this "Security Update". Look here:

If you have a good firewall tell it to NOT allow genuine advantage to access the internet!!! It IS an invasion of privacy!! Plus I think there is a law where no-one has the right to invade your computer which is what the wga is doing by phoning home.
