I have been having a recurring problem. It does not happen all the time, only once and a while, and it is annoying. I could be in the middle of something and then i get the error screen for "Generic Host Process for Win32" and it asks to send error report.
as long as I leave the error message up, sending the error report or not, the computer runs fine. But as soon as I close any error screens, the computer restarts, much like it does with the blaster virus. I do not have that virus, however, because i have the updated norton (thanks to getting the virus the day after it was fist discovered). Then, while it is shutting down, it stops at "Windows is shutting down" It will not go any farther than this and I have to restart maunally by holding in the power button. It doesnt happen all the time, and it is not somethign that I can say happens because i did this or that.

What is the generic host process? what could be the issue?

Hi Bewtyfull Gurl,

The restarts are caused by XP itself as a self-protection mechanism. Go to:

ControlPanel>System>Advanced>StartUp & Recovery>Settings

There is a checkbox there called 'Automatically restart' under SystemFailure. Uncheck it to stop the restarts.

The 'Generic Host Process' is svchost.exe
It usually means something else is causing trouble because many programs use svchost to do stuff for them.
Here's just one from Microsoft

Try to find out what is really causing this.
You should get some info now that the restarts are gone.

nope, strike one. it is not set to automatically restart. It is shutting down thru the RPC service. gives me the 60 seconds to save and close open applications and then it shuts down. I have tried that one.

However, you may have hit a homerun with the Microsoft link. It says about an HP printer, low and behold, I have an HP printer installed. I am going to check for updated drivers and see if that helps out!!

Hi Bewtyfull Girl,

Let me say that RPC and 60 seconds still smacks of a lingering virus or remnents thereof,, just like the MSBlast. You must get onto the UPDATE WEBSITE for XP and get all the critical updates downloaded and installed. You might also download the FIXBLAST program from NORTON, and the STINGER program from Mcafee. The first one is obviously aimed at MSBlast, while the Mcafee one will check for a good number of nasties. Here is the STINGER Addy:-

You may have to try a few shots at downloading because that RPC error could hit you at any time... GOOD LUCK:)

I had this message only after the instalation of Zone Alarm. My compter appears to function ok, however I did have the Blaster virus when it first came out. Is there a way to rid my computer of this message?
