I use an HP D530 with WIN XP Pro and my ISP is Compuserve through a US Robotics 56K modem.

Every time I try to log on I get a message "Generic Host process has encountered a problem and needs to close"

followed by an error report that involves the svchost.exe and appcompat.txt files. From then on the PC crashes and the only thing to do is pull the cable out to get going again. Can anyone give me any suggestions for help?

You may have a virus on your computer. Some of these viruses going around will cause svchost.exe to shutdown.
