I am trying to play a game with Windows XP, and I keep getting the following error:

General protection fault!
History: appInit

Does anybody know what might be causing this?

I am getting the same error with Harry Potter.
According to one message on the microsoft.public.windowsxp.games newsgroup, somebody has had the same error on Windows ME - so maybe its not an XP problem.

My sys spec is :
XP pro,
AMD Athlon 900
ASUS A7V-133 Motherboard
20 GB NTFS HD
Creative GeForce 2 GTS 32 MB
Creative Soundblaster Live

Having the same problem here for one user under Win2000. Strange, though, that it works fine for another user. One Does anyone know how to fix the problem?

Is there a difference in the rights assigned to these two users - fx is one of them an administrator and the other a regular user?

Thank goodness I found this message! We were having the same glitch with the general protection default after using the game for some time and had tried everything. After reading this site, we tried logging on as a different user (hadn't thought of that) and can use the game again. (Both logins were regular users.) We will don't know why, but this sure helps. Thanks.

The AppInit error refers to an application Initialise file, which will normally contain details about the particular user in a particular program, and is referenced when a user starts to run a program - i.e. Harry Potter. This explains why it works for a different user. I too came across this problem with XP and Harry Potter on a young friend's machine. Logging in as his sister worked. Try remove the faulty user from the machine, rebooting and re-installing the user. Incidently, I discovered that when my friend got frustrated with his lack of progress in the game, he would switch off the power to the PC without shutting down or closing the game! A sure way to cause GPF's and AppInit errors.

Bought a copy yesterday and I've got the same General Protection during an Init.

Looking at the hp.log and hp.ini that lurk in
C:\Documents and Settings\aroberts\My Documents\Harry Potter

It looks like the installer has incorrectly identified the SB 128 Sound card. So when you try to run it it just bombs out after a few seconds with the Protection fault and a whole load of "Critical: " errors in the log.

I don't suppose anyone out there has Harry Potter working on a machine with a SB 128 card. If you have could you send me a copy of there hp.ini

Had the same issue. Filled out an email tech support form and received a canned response back. One of the canned responses was for this issue and following the steps (deleting hp.ini) worked for me...

"General Protection Fault History:AppInit"

After ensuring the items above, deleting the games configuration file so that a new one can be written may be necessary. Follow the steps below to do so:

To delete this configuration file:
1. Click on the Windows Start button, then click on either Find or Search.
2. Click on the Files and Folders selection.
3. In the Named field enter hp.ini. Choose the hard drive that the game was installed to in the Look In field. Usually this is the C: drive.
4. Click Find Now or Search and give the utility a moment to find the file.
5. Once the file is located delete it from the listing in this window. Left-click on the file to highlight it then either right click the file and choose Delete or press the Delete key on your keyboard.
6. Click Yes when prompted then close this window.
