I have a Gateway machine that is practically new (less than 3 months). It came with a Radeon 8500 64MB video card. After all the driver updates, etc. I noticed that when playing Everquest, my screen would go completely black for a few seconds then return to the game. This increased in frequency and would eventually lead to the machine rebooting due to video errors.
I replaced my video card with a Geforce4 Ti 4600. Now the machine has drawing errors. The task bar turns black, buttons go black, and system needs to reboot. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the video card and monitor in safe mode and normally to no avail. Installed drivers from disc provided (not on MS HCL) and updated from Windows Update, driver install directly from MS without drivers from disc and I still get the problems. In Everquest, I can see square pixels flashing in the background. Eventhough I am using EQ as a point of reference, the errors and rebooting necessary will happen with any application that I run. I have Norton Antivirus, everything is up to date and no detection of any virus.
Any suggestions? This a motherboard problem?

You may also try a BIOS update for the MoBo; I assume you have tried the latest nVidia drivers.
Very important: Did you first uninstall the ATI drivers before installing the GeForce card?
Hope this helps...

Yes, have Dx8.1. Did not uninstall the ATI drivers first, as removing the card automatically detected new hardware upon reboot.
Will check BIOS version on the board, but would assume that with it being about 3 months old that it would not make that much of a difference.

Open up Add/Remove Programs and see if ATI display drivers are listed there. ATI drivers are a pain to get rid of if a non ATI card has been installed beforehand. Your standard VGA driver might also have been replaced with an ATI version. If you still have the Radeon then temporarily install it again, remove the drivers from the control panel and then install the GeForce.
