If you mean commercial-video DVD's, Windows XP doesn't come with a standard DVD-player utility. You might try one of these:

this is a gateway media computer .it had player utility factory installed. worked fine till it had virus problem .fixed virus problem then discovered it no longer recognized dvd's

Could the virus have affected the player utility? It's unlikely it could have affected the hardware (DVD-Drive). When inserting a DVD (either media or data) can you view any files or folders?
