If you have MS Encarta 2000 installed you may notice a large gap in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS listing. The problem seems to be a bad uninstall string in the registry.

After BACKING UP your REGISTRY
Open REGEDIT and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\UNINSTALL and look for the key labeled MS ENCARTA 2000

Delete this key and the large gap in your programs listing is gone.

My gap occured between Live Update and MS Flight Simulator 2002 and the key for MS Encarta fell just before FS 2002

If you Do not have Encarta the bogus key will be the one listed just before the program at the end of the gap

Say you have MS Works then have to scroll a country mile down the list to get to Norton AV, the uninstall key that falls just before Norton AV is your culprit.
