I just changed my OS from Win98 to WinXP Pro. With my GEForce4 Ti 4400, Battlefield 1942 ran great on Win98 with all graphics maxed out. Now, on XP, the game runs like mud. I d/l'ed latest drivers for the video card, but to no avail. Has anyone else had performance problems with games on WinXP?

Games on XP work fine. I have a GEFORCE 2. Works great. Probably have to change the settings for the game.

Try running the games in Win98 compatibility mode. Might work might not. I have two games F1 2000 and V8 Challenge that will not run in XP. Had to create a dualboot system with ME just to play my favourite games.

From a Microsoft web page:

If an older application gives you trouble when running
Windows XP, you can set the compatibility properties
manually so that the program runs in a different mode,
such as Windows 95, or in a different display or resolution
setting. To set the compatibility properties for a program:
1. Right-click the executable or the program shortcut to the
executable, and then click Properties.
2. Select the Run this program in compatibility mode check box.
3. From the list, select an operating system that the program
runs in comfortably.
4. If necessary, also change the display settings and/or
resolution, or disable the Windows XP visual themes.
Run the program again when you?re finished changing the
settings. Adjust the compatibility settings again if the
program is still not running smoothly: a program that's
unhappy on Windows 2000 may flourish on Windows 98.

XP is problamatic when it comes to games, because out of anything in software, games put the greatest stress and demand on a system. XP is so new, a lot of games just won't run on it, and probably Microsoft doesn't even know why! It makes no sense, some of my DOS WIN98 games run super in my XP such as mech Warrior2 and Ghost Bear; then Mercenaries, which is newer, won't run!! I even made a dual boot with WIN98 on my machine, and Mercenaries STILL won't run! Mech W. Vengence and Black Knight run fine. Go figure. I hope the new MWarrior Mercenaries coming out this Christmas will run. I guess so, because they created it after XP was released, let's hope.
