What is the system temperature? How many case fans do you have? Are they set up correctly(front mounted intake-rear mounted exhaust-side panel intake)? Have you checked your cpu fan?

sounds like either the fan is not good enough or you have not seated the heatsink properly , i would remove the heatsink clean it with a vacuum(they can get awfully blocked with dust,) and then clean the old paste add some new thermal paste, and reseat the heatsink. reboot. have fun
i have left the case open and the heatsinks are clean!i have 3 fans in total including power and processor fan...

Sometimes just opening the case does nothing, because it interupts the flow through the case. Are you using a fan or hair dryer on the cold setting directed at the cpu area while the case is open? The suggestion about checking the heatsink is a good one. I would use Artic Silver 3, or their new product Ceramique when reinstalling it. Do not use acetone or nail polish remover to clean the old paste off. I use dish detergent and water with a soft toothbrush to clean my cpu off the old thermal paste, some people use alcohol. You could add a new case fan to the front of the case to act as an intake fan. You could look for a better after-market heatsink/fan combination that people use when they are overclocking their cpu at an overclocking website, or make a post at the overclocking area of this forum for their recommnedations for a P4 unit.
is there a way to tell if ur pc is overclocking????

Jay, go into the bios and look up what the Frequency/Voltage Control setting are. The other thing you can try is check and just use the default settings, starting with Load Fail Safe Defaults and see if things work. If they do then try the Optimized Defaults and see if it still works properly. Then there is the Top Performance setting if you think your system can handle it, you can always go back to the other settings should things get unstable. Take care and all the best!
