I bought the game "Morrowind", and I played it for about 2 weeks, without a problem. But one day it started freezing, after about 10 minutes of play. I have also found that the game "Heavy Metal FAKK2" also freezes, after a short time.
Like I said, the game worked normally for a couple of weeks, but out of the blue, this problem started.
The games freeze, and ctrl+alt+delete has no effect. The game's background music is still playing, but the picture is frozen, and the computer is unresponsive to all commands.
I tried 5 different video drivers (including the latest). I tried using different audio drivers, and I tried turning the sound off, in the games.
I reset everything in my bios to their default settings. I tried using the original bios, then I used the updated bios. No help.
I had no idea what it could be, since I had not installed anything recently, and I had not changed any settings recently.
So, I reformated my Hard Drive, and I re-installed Windows XP pro. It made no difference. The games still freeze, after a few minutes of play.
Well, I formatted my Hard Drive again, and I installed Windows ME this time. And everything works properly. The games do not freeze.
Am I doomed to use Windows ME, from now on? Does anyone have any suggestions?
Hardware:
pentium 4 (1.6a) CPU
ASUS P4s333 motherboard
512 MB RAM
Creative Labs Geforce2 GTS video card
ATI "TV wonder LE" PCI card
SoundBlaster Live Audio Card
Logitech Keyboard and optical mouse
Plus, an extra case fan for cooling

The first thing that comes to mind is a windows compatability problem... Check to see if the game supports windows XP.If not have you tried running it in compatablity mode for 98 or 95?

I had a similar problem with Dungeon Siege. It would crash after about ten minutes. My whole system was actually having problems. I shut off antialiasing on my video card and it made the game run perfect and fixed all other problems on my pc.

How are you doing Joe?
I just wanted to tell you that I have that exact same motherboard and same processor and I have the same problem with windows XP. I am 10% sure about this is that maybe the computer overheats or something. When I use windows 2000 Nothing happens It works just fine. Do you think maybe its the motherboard. I have this problem with many games Serious Sam 2nd Encounter Duke Nukem Manhattan Project GTA3 ETC....

I also have the same problem in Win XP and 2000, using P4S333, asus geforce 4 8170 card and geforce 2 mx440 card (which is slightly worse). Happens on GTA3 and Jedi Knight 2. Would love an anwser to this one.

i have the same problem i have a p4s333 and windows xp pro and if a use a detonator after the 23.11, my games freeze after 5 minutes... but if a use the 23.11 version.. all is ok.... this is my config
asus p4s333
p4 1.8 512k
SB Live!
Asus Geforce 2MX 400 32MB
USB logitech mouse
512 DDR 333Mhz
Quantum Fireball AS 40GB ATA/100

I have similar problems with my system. Not just programs, but WinXP itself slows down to a crawl. I had it crash using the latest Detonator drivers, so I rolled back to the stock winxp ones. These are my system specs:
P4 1.6 Ghz
P4S333-WA (on board audio)
256MB DDR2100
WD 60GB 7200RPM UDMA100
GeForce MX200 64MB SDR 4xAGP
Dlink DFE538tx ethernet

hey my gta3 freezes in XP after like 10 minutes it just stops and the sounds skips. cant figure it out. im running:
athlon 1.46
384mb ram 64mb
gforce4 ti 4200
win XP
20GB 7200 udma100
usb optical mouse
3com ethernet
soundblaster 128 pci (original drivers).this problem also happened on my old gforce4 mx440 and a gforce2mx400.
also i dont think my hard drive is getting the data the the cpu fast enough. idunno , would love to see an answer for this.

you should all check and make sure that your power supply can put out enough watts. in 3d mode many times they will not put out the enough voltage and this causes the game to lockup. geforce 4 cards require at least 350 watts. I recomend at least 400 for the Ti Series.

I get constant freezes in SOF2, after 5-15mins of playing, system freezes and the sound effect/music starts to loop (like an audio CD skipping)
P4S333
1.6A
WD 80MB 8MB Cache
Onboard Sound
3COM 905c
Asus Geforce4 440MX
1GB Mushkin DDR

Hey I had this problem with my PC too
but I managed to fix it! But only for
Dungeon seige...However, if you can,a.) set the screen ressolution to: 640x480
b.) The video driver set too "Primary display driver - Hard ware
c.) Set the filtering too"Bilinear filtering"It works in dungeon seige but some games like
black and white, can't have this problem edited... =( Please help with black and white =)

Ok, I am by far not a computer expert. I just got my first computer and am having troubles getting games to run longer than 1/2 hr before freezing. I have read all of the above messages and because I don't know about computers, I don't know how to fix my problem.
Is there anyone that has the patience to walk me through what I need to do?
Frustrated!

Guys I had the same problems in a few games.
Mine would run great in WinME but it would lock in 2k/xp.
Follow these steps:
Go to Device Manager
Open "Computer"
Right click on "Uniprocesser..." or whatever it says, click properties
Go to Driver, click update driver
Select "Display a list of the known drivers...", click next
Change it to Standard PCIt will ask you to reboot, it will detect all your hardware again, it might help to have the latest drivers ready for vid card, sound card, agp controller etc
Basically this just turns off certian power management, for example you will have to turn your computer off manually.
Hope this helps :)

WEll, as you all know i am a victim of Windows XP pro. I just bought
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Gigabyte mobo
GeForce 4 Ti4200 128mb DDR
256mb DDR333
and whatever else, Counter-Strike, and GTA3, q3 rocket arena 3, all lock up and depends, its some times 10-20 more or less til lock up. I have tried all, and the above message says Device manager. Where is that? I tried right click on desktop, and my comp!
