Game crashes to desktop

ok, I've read many threads regarding the same issue, tried all the recommended solutions but I still can't succeed.
Sims vacation (and thus all previous expansion packs) crashes back to desktop just after the loading screen. I am the Administrator, I installed the latest Nvidia drivers (have a GeForce2 MX400), DIrectX 8.1... what else could I try?

Uninstall sp1 then reinstall your game.
sp1 is what causes most game crashes back to desktop.

before you uninstall SP1, check your game for updates

yeah well there are no updates or patches on the game website and their solution to this problem which seems to be common is to turn off graphics, sound and such and all the other tasks running...
BUT - before I was able to run the game with no problems on a pc with even lower requirements that I have now but on Win98...
so I guess i'll try to uninstall the sp1. but why do they say it's a critical update if it might be the opposite?:-P
