On my Toshiba notebook running Vista Home Premium, I have been trying to solve error code 80072EFD reported by Windows Live Messenger version 8.5. This code blocked my being able to log on. I tried everything outlined HERE. Nothing helped or worked ... until I tried reinstalling Windows Live Messenger version 2008 over Windows Live Messenger version 8.5.
The purpose of this post is that if you run into the same error, don't waste your time chasing dead=end solutions. Just install the new version over the old version.
Stupid M$!
P.S. Don't try to click on the link now - it will generate "Sorry, Spaces is temporarily unavailable at this time."

Perhaps so but why didn't the error message say so? I clicked on the Troubleshoot button and it proceeded to run a variety of diagnostic tests that did nothing. I then googled for code 80072EFD. The solution page was rather lengthy and none of the recommended fixes did any good. It also gave no clues that I could be running an outdated version that ceased to work like the old MSN Messenger. It was then I played with reinstalling the latest version over the pre-release beta version.
