Hello,
Is there anyone out there that can guide me on the setup of an FTP server i would also like recommendations on the FTP Server sofware to use. Basically what i am doing is trying to set this up to share files (lots)
with various people. I am putting an 80 Gig HD into my system solely for file sharing. Any comments ideas and help is much appreciated.

Try using IIS. It comes with XP Pro. Just go to add/remove programs, and it should be listed. Has web server, FTP server, etc.

Control Panel-> add/remove software->add/remove windows componets->(scroll to Internet Information Services (IIS) , select it and click details-> check file Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service( it might require your windows XP Cd- have it close by just in case. Then ok, ok, ok ok and I believe at one point it’s going to ask you if you want it to be Read or Write and you’ll check both- if it doesn’t – don’t worry we’ll get there at one point.

I would recommend creating a folder somewhere on your drive to be designated for you FTP site say call it MyFTP folder. Then:
r-click My Computer-> Manage->on left open Services and Applications->Internet Information Service and the select FTP sites. Then Action ->new-> FTP site. You’ll be going thru the wizard… give your site a name ex. My FTP site,in IP address and port Settings leave everything as it is unless you want specific setting(default will do), then NEXT and browse to your folder called MyFTP, click ok or next, check both Read and write..and finish. Once it’s done, select on the left FTP sites and on the right site you’ll see something called My FTP site (stopped). First stop default before you can start yours.
At this point anyone can access that directory using anonymous as user name. I don’t’ know if you want to do that. If now, r-click My FTP site and select properties. Go to Security accounts and uncheck –allow anonymous connections- but then you’ll have to created user names for your people or just one- it depends on how you want to manage it. If you want to make it read-only, go to Home Directory tab and uncheck Write option in there. … I’m not sure if that’s enough info. Let me know.
