I need to transfer files between a PC running XP and a PC running redhat Linux 9.
I installed a FTP server (wftpd) on the WIN XP PC. When I enter ftp 192.168.123.224 (ipaddress of the XP PC) on the linux PC, I am getting connection time out.
The two PC can ping each other with no probelm.
I am just wondering if I have missed anything ?

I had a similar problem and with much screwing around I discovered that I needed both CLIENT and server on BOTH computers. I may be wrong but I think VNC (Virtual network connection is compatible with both windows and Linux. VNC is a freeware program… just do a search on the net and you’ll find it

Are the two computers connected on the same network?
Is the XP computer on a cable connection?
Transferring data via FTP should not be affected by the OS. The data should just go from FTP Client to the other FTP Client. I can't see how the OS would come into play.
More than likely, you have a restriction imposed on you by the ISP you are using. I know that some Cable ISP companies will not allow FTP programs to be used. I am sure there are other ISP companies out there that feel that FTP transfers are only good for illegal activities and have setup blocking software.

When FTP'ing to linux box you need to create the linux system as a server....its an option on the install disk. You then need to create a local domain name for the linux box so it can be identified on the network. Then create a user share with the appriate rights to be able to upload to it.
Now run your ftp from your windows box...all should be good from there on.

PS.Remember that Linux OS's by default lockdown all the vulnerabilities so you have to open them up
