I've got 2 pc's set up at home each running their own FTP server. One is WinXP and the other is Mandrake 10.1. They are both behind my DLink DI-624 router using port forwarding for the FTP Servers. My XP machine is using Bulletproof FTP Server and is set up on port 31, and Mandrake is using Pure-FTP and is setup on port 41 (was using ProFTP with the same problem). The thing is I am able to connect to them both from some places, but not others. I am usually able to connect to them fine if the pc I'm connecting from is not behind a router, and I am able to connect to them from behind a router at some places, just not at others. I've tried using port 21 for each of them (not at the same time), and placing the machines on DMZ on my router, but get the same results. I've also tried using different FTP clients all with the same result. They actually "connect" fine, it is when it tries to do the directory listing that I get "Error 425 Cannot open data connection". I've tried both with passive mode on and off, it doesn't make any difference.

I thought that maybe their routers were blocking ports 31 and 41 at first, so I tried switching them to port 21 (not at the same time though) but still got the same result for both, yet they were able to connect to other peoples FTP servers using port 21.

If I take my pc's off my router at home and connect them directly everything works fine, so I know it's something to do with my DI-624 router. Also, I know the data port is different than the specified port. Is the data port always port 20? or is it just 1 less than the specified port (for example the data port for my XP machine would be port 30?). I've tried forwarding port 20 and 30 to my XP machine, but get the same results.

It's just weird, cause the problem is with my router somewhere, yet some people can connect to it fine and others can't.

I've been working on this on and off for months now and I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Dan.

deadlydog, SWAG, suspect you're on the right track suspecting the router. Some get upset by redirects. Be sure that's not what's happening. Seems odd that a direct connection would work and others get blocked. Wish I knew the answer for you, but for now, a guess is my best shot.

Yeah, I'm sure it's the port forwarding on my router that's messing everything up, but I'm not sure how to get around it. I'm not sure if I should be port forwarding any other ports in addition to 31 and 41. I don't think I have to, and like I said it works from some places but not from others. Any suggestions would help. Thanks.
