frustration with flash drive

I have a 2G flash drive that I plug into the USB port on my computer. It's frustrating when my computer doesn't acknowledge the flash drive. Sometimes it takes half an hour before recognizing that it's plugged in, other times it doesn't recognize it at all. Unless it acknowledge it, I can't access it. Is there a way to manually force it to acknowledge the flash drive - or any external drive for that matter?

If it won't auto detect when you insert it, then you can click "my computer" and it should be displayed there as a "removable disk". You can click it to open it.... at least that will open it for you right away. Not sure why it won't auto detect for you though....

Unfortunately, it doesn't show up under "my computer" either. It just isn't being detected at all.
