Frustrating internet connection problem

Specs: Windows XP
I am on an XP PC with a DSL connection (no network), and for a couple of weeks now the internet will cut out frequently. If I click on a web link, it will not load unless I click on it again, sometimes several times, or refresh the page repeatedly. This happens on Firefox, Chrome, IE, even Thunderbird email client. Ping tests pass every time. Tracert test shows hop 1 timing out every time I do the test. I performed all the usual virus/spyware scans, and checked out the TCP/IP settings.
Anyone have any ideas I can try?

You may have a faulty filter on one of your phones. I got a much stronger connection by installing a filter right at the telephone interface box and removing my individual filters on my phones. If you have any xtra filters, try swapping them out.

Thanks for the help! I hadn't thought about the filters, so I'll pick up a couple new ones and try it out. Actually, one of them broke quite a while ago, but I didn't replace it at the time because it didn't seem to cause any trouble.

Derek - I am in the US.
