Front USB ports not working for ext

The front USB ports (I have two) work for things like joysticks and webcams, but when I plug external drives like a digital camera or thumb drive (i.e. those that should appear as an extra drive letter in My Computer) Windows gives a bubble that reads "The USB device is not recognized" and that it could not work correctly. When I plug it on any of the back ports, USB mass storage drives work perfectly. (WinXP SP2, Intel motherboard, and all ports are theoretically 2.0)

They may be all 2.0 but they might not have enough power to operate that which you are pluging into them. Also there maybe a jumper to apply to the front settings or may be a section in the bios that controls the front usb ports. Another issue could be that your bios may need to be updated for the front ports.
