Comment:

I have been having a strange problem with a new installtion of XP. I have had the same problem 3 times, each after reformatting and starting again...

My problem is that I install a fresh copy of WindowsXP and after applying Windows updates, installing anti-virus, firewall, etc the characters on my screen turn to another language (it looks like Chinese)! It doesn't happen after a reboot it happens right before my eyes whilst I'm looking at the screen!

I'm not sure but it seems to happen shortly after Service Pack 2 has installed. I have used the Windows Update web site to install SP2 and also the downloadable version but they both have the problem.

I've searched the internet but can find no other reference to the problem. I'm not a n00b before anyone asks and I've installed Windows dozens of times on different PC's without a problem but this has me clueless!

Has anyone heard of/experienced this problem before? Any help would be appreciated :)

I assume you have tried changing the language setting in Control Panel – Regional and Language Options.

Supposedly sp2 is a fix for this problem, but take a look anyway:
language hotfix

Sorry, that's all I could find for now.

Try delete and recreate the partition using FDISK and then format before booting to XP CD.

Where "on the screen" are these characters showing up? Do all the titles in the various applications, and under the icons change?

Or are you talking about characters that you're typing from the keyboard?

I've seen the icon stuff before...

I have, yeh. I originally thought it was a virus (or the like) as it did initially happen before I had any updates or anti-virus on my system but it's strange the way it just happens when I'm staring at it and not after a reboot or anything.

The last time I formatted my PC and reinstalled XP I disconnected my router from the telephone line and applied my firewall and anti-virus (both Norton 2005) and whichever updates I could (both Windows and Norton).

On each occasion of the problem happening I am sure it is within an hour or two of Service Pack 2 going on my system.

I'll see if I can remove SP2 later when I get home (if I can navigate around Control Panel in Chinese anyway) and see if that fixes it!

Cheers (suggestions still welcome by the way) :)

I don't believe SP2 have anything to do with your problem.

In reply to Dr. Zhivago, ever single character on my screen changes except for the tooltips (pop-ups) which remain in English(!?!).

XpUser, did removing the partition using FDisk work for you?

Cheers

It will work for anybody who want to do a truly clean installation/reinstallation of Windows XP. By deleting and recreating the partition and then format the HD you will have eliminated all traces of whatever problem you had prior to doing this.

I have some done some testing on using FDISK to remove a Non Dos partition and have not been able to get it done. By all appearances it looks like it worked but after the process you can boot right back into XP, If there is a special way to do it please post it. I don't mean this to be sarcastic but would like to know. thanks. Frank

Non-DOS partition indicates a partition that is not native to the M$ OS. For example this could be a Linux partition. I never have dealt with Linux or anything similar to it.

Run Regedit.
2. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
3. Look for a key named Fonts. -- If this key is missing, create a new one
Right Click on CurrentVersion > New > Key. Rename the New Key to Fonts.
4. Go to Fonts in the Control Panel
5. Select File - Install New Fonts
6. Browse to C:\Windows\Fonts and double click on the Fonts folder
7. When the fonts display in the box above, click Select All then OK

With symbols as the default font, it may be dificult to navigate the registy editor
and run through these steps. If that is the case, try Solution #2

Solution #2

1 Copy ALL of the text below starting with "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00"
down to the end

2 paste the text into notepad and save it as fonts.reg
3 Double click on fonts.reg.
4 When it asks if you want to enter the information into the registry click Yes
6 Restart the computer
