Hi!
currently I do XP installations from hard drive (copied entire CD to HD) by executing /i386/winnt.exe file in the DOS (I use Windows 98 installation CD to boot into DOS, also before executing winnt.exe I execute smartdrv.exe from win98 CD)
Everything is fine if C: drive is formated with FAT32, but I'd like have all my hard drives formated with NTFS. Yes, I know that DOS doesnt recognize NTFS format, so I use NTFSDOS PRO program.
Now, there is a problem: when I execute winnt.exe it asks the installation source (witch is normal), and on next screen its trying load first file and gives error that there is not enough memory (I have 1gig of RAM).
So, do I do something wrong? is there any work around of it? is there any other way to install XP from HD?

Thanks.

Why not just boot the machine with the XP CD and format it NTFS that way? Why would you want to bother going about it in such a roundabout way?

I realise that running setup from your hard drive may be quicker than cd but why dont you just install from the xp cd set you bios to boot from cd and you can format and install windows from your cd

I should think you have already spent more time finding a solution to that cluster of an install technique that you would have installing it as intended.

If you didn't like Jimi's answer, that doesn't make it useless. In the span of time since I saw your first message I /did/ install XP.

You almost sound like you are trying to do 'many' installs in this manner. I have done Ghost images of an install and blown the image onto several PCs, if time is your concern.

is there other benefits to copying setup files to hd in win xp

i know that when you do this w/ win 98
that you don't have to reach for the disk
every time you install new hardware.

same thing with 2k/XP (well, for the best results I search in the registers for X:\ (where X is my CD drive letter) and replace it with the HD letter where my setup files are)
also, the installation speed increases 3-4 times if u use separate HDs.
another advantage is that u can integrate service pack into the setup files and do fresh install with service pack at ones. (thats another 10-20 min of saved time that u dont have download and install service pack)

If your that deep into multiple installs and also that pressed for time then I suggest you buy an OEM 3 or 30 pack which comes with the Windows OPK tools CD.

You can then do the installs with all the service packs, updates and any other appliations you like via network install in less time than by CD or copying from the hard drive. You can also modify other Windows options that are not available any other way regardless of techinque.

If you are not an OEM then let me know as I am and can get them.
