After suffering months of freezing PC and blue screens (primarily the dreaded kernel stack error. I have done tried all the recovery tricks from here and MS website, done chkdsk /f /r repeatedly over four days without using the PC in between, and all the other stuff from here and Microsoft. Bought an expensive Reg cleaner and run it repeatedly. No luck. No recently installed soft or hardware. New Dell desktop. 1 year of trouble-free life until this.

I now boot from the recovery XP CD (it includes SP2) to try to reformat the whole shebang and it gets as far as loading setup files OK, then as usual tries to start load windows installation and ... blue screen. STOP error 0x0000007B (OXF78D2524 OXC0000034, OX00000000, OX00000000).

Decided to buy a new HDD and install XP on that. (3 weeks from Dell!) and in machine. Old one disconnected. Tried installing XP from disk. It stalls at exactly the same moment as before (loads up preliminary files, gets to ""starting Windows" and then the dreaded blue screen with the same error message as before. 0X0000007B (OXF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). So presumably not HD (although always good to have one). Have downloaded Memtest and run it for 24 hours. No RAM errors reported.

Can anyone suggest what I try next?

You asked this 4 weeks ago:

On Google using the main stop error:

My suspicion would be the SATA controller driver, I am assumming SATA as you do not furnish much info. You may have to create a Slipstreamed XP CD with the OEM Manufacturers Drivers..

Thank you for your reply. Yes same as 4 weeks ago but then I had not tried the new HDD option. I will admit that I don't know what a "slipstreamed XP CD with the OEM Manufacturers drivers" is. Any chance you could advise me actually what to do?

Many thanks

Well first off you have to find out wether or not you have a SATA or IDE hard drive.

If it is SATA then you need to find the Manufacturer of the Controller Chipset.

To make a dedicated CD nLite will suffice:

Though to be honest it would of been easier to pay an IT Guru to fix it for you....

it is a SATA HDD.

However, could you tell me why the new HDD gives the same problem. The problem presumably lies on the recovery CD (used before successfully) or somewhere on the motherboard?

The hard drive is immaterial, I was talking about the SATA Controller Chipset Driver, the SATA Controller is intergrated on the motherboard.

To be honest it would seem that you need to take the PC to an IT Guru !

If I could, I would. However I live is a rather remote bit of France and finding an IT guru is very difficult - I have tried. If the SATA Controller is integrated with the motherboard, is it possible to (a) install a clean driver (presupposing I can find one) or is a new motherboard from Dell a solution. The post (mail)does get here albeit very slowly!

Stop error also shows up if you have a faulty or incompatible Memory (RAM) module.
have you checked on that ?

Did you ever try the factory restore option that Dell ships all its new systems with .Its most likley to late since you swapped out your H.D. ,however if you can put your originial H.D. back in ,upon boot up the first thing you will see is the Dell spalsh screen ,just a black screen that says Dell in big letters right away ,be careful you can easily miss your oppertunity you press the F11 key ,if its working and you have this option it will open the restore page where it list a few options ,one is to repair you current install of WindowsXP ,which you can try ,another its to rstore your PC to the way it was the day you recieved it ,you will loss all of your personal data and any programs you installed after you recieved the system ! You should give Dell support a call ,even though your PC is over a year old and unless you paid for a extended warranty out of warranty ,Iam sure they will give you percise step by step directions on using the factory restore feature ! Also you should have a Resource CD that came with your system a some other CD's including the OEM version of Windows XP, on the resource CD is all the drivers including your chipset drivers for your PC ,if you did not recieve this bundle of CD's with your system ,I would call Dell ,they will send them to you. Good luck and best wishes !
Take Care Nick
