I'm experiancing substantial slowdown of my system from years of installing and uninstalling and would like to start from scratch when I install xp. However, I damaged the restore disk for my system, so I don't have disks for some of the programs that came with my system. I was told that if I save the MyPrograms directory in a partition, then format the rest of the drive, I could still run the programs. Will this work? Don't you have to do an install to get windows to recignize the program? I sure wish I had done a full backup when I first got this thing!

if you want to save any data just use fdisk and split your hard disk and move the data which you would like to not delete..it would be D: and now you can format c: ..so then install any os to c: hard drive..

good lucks

if you do as bora suggests, u will lose all your files as u can't repartition & save existing files with fdisk
you would have to use a prog like partition magic to save your files while partitioning
& yes, you will have to re-install all your programs but will still have your personal files saved on d: after partitioning
a clean install is preferable to an update
