hi
I have been having problems with my pc freezing. I am trying to reinstall WIN XP from an originalxp disc, but it keeps freezing during the setup process. My pc is a hp pavilion 710, with on board sound and graphics. I have tested the memory and hard drive with no problems. Any idea what could be causing this

have managed to et xp installed after many rstarts but now it get to the welcome scren with the blue bar which movs across the screen then freezes again. i have removed the pci modem which was the only expansion card installed. pc will boot into safe mode and runs ok.

First of all, did you go into the bios and set the bootup sequence with CDRom as first?
Then when XP starts to install, be sure to delete all partitions and format a new one, that will give you a fresh install. If you install over a previous partition you will have nothing but trouble.
If that doesn't work, you may want to try some other ram (borrow some from a working machine if you can) Post back your results
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

i have tried installing xp twice already using the method you suggested. i ran memtest86 on my RAM and after 2 hours it showed no problems

Sorry I can't be of more help, maybe some other members have some input. How big and how old is the HD?
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

You said it booted fine into safe mode.. Sounds to me like it is a driver problem? Not sure how it could be that though if it is a fresh install.. Hmm.. When you boot into safe mode go into device manager and see if there are any problems with a device.. IF there isnt reboot again and f8 before the os choice menu comes up and try selecting enable boot logging. if it still freezes try the boot logging a few more times because it will see which device / driver caused the machine to hault and it will skip what is making it crash on the next boot. See if that helps
