Freezes/shuts down on boot - xp

My guess - either nasty virus or harddrive failure...
- 5yr old homemade computer - used for internet, downloads, music - did have an up-to date norton security software. which didn't detect anything. ever
due to slow processing, i ran spybot, and adaware, then ran reg cleaner. I rebooted and now it goes through boot process, asks for normal, or safe mode boot - on any of the choices it freezes. I booted from xp cd and menu comes up then my computer totally shuts off....Any suggestions please??..

I had a 250 gig hard drive and an 80 gig external. I saved mostly everything to the external. I'm not exactly sure how much i had left but 90% sure I had plenty of room, I never recieved any warning messages.
