You say the machine won't boot now? Not even into the BIOS? If so, unplug the cd drive, the hard drive, and pop out the RAM chips. Then try booting. If nothing happens you'll need to contact HP and ask them what's up (sounds like a motherboard or BIOS issue to me).
Maybe start a new post with a little more info as to what's happening right now...

Does the computer beep? You can go to one of the following to find out what the beeps stand for.

Here for AMI BIOS
or
Here for Phoenix BIOS

If the computer doesn't beep or you have a different brand of BIOS, I don't know what you should do. You may have a problem with the motherboard if the BIOS does or doesn't tell you or a problem with the BIOS.

Laptops are real SOB's to get memory. You have to find out what speed and what size and TYPE of ram card the motherboard will accept. You can not just slap in a card that Joe Smuck says is gonna work. I went thru the same thing except mine is a Toshiba. If you're going that slow the bloody card just might have to be EDO ram. The bottom line is the machine can't see the ram. And it's locking up the system. Been there...
