Freeze before startup screen

On occasion windows Xp will freeze before the startup screen loads and shows a blank black screen. Even doing CTRL-ALT-DEL wont reboot the computer. If the computer does get into windows, occasionally the desktop loads without icons or the task bar, or the start menu doesn't work.
Occasionally freezes on shutdown as well.
The computer is:
K7 S5A with Althon XP 1700+ 256Mb DDR Ram Asus 7100 Pro 64Mb Sb Live D.E 5.1 Skymaster 10/100 NIC Motorola SM56 PCI Modem 60 Gig Baracuda Acer CDRW 24x 10 x 40 Cordless Logitech Mouse and KB
Same here, except its everytime i boot on a hp 733 pentIII pavilion 8500. xp pro 256 pc133 ram.
it goes to black screen w/ 2 little white "_" symbols appear in upper Left corner

what cd burning software and antivirus do you have installed? and have you added subtracted cd burning software?

Thanks for the replies. The computer has Norton Antivirus and Nero installed, could that be a problem?

I don't think it is Norton since I have not installed my norton antivirus but I occasionally experience the same problem

I have the same problem with a K7 S5A Motherboard running a Duron 1000Mhz and 512 Mb DDR and Win XP. But I only seem to get the problem when I have a CDRW in my CDRW drive. If I take it out and boot up again, everything seems to work fine. I'm thinking it must have something to do with either some CD drives, or perhaps some burning software. If anybody can break it down any further, please let me and everybody else know!
