Is there a free anti-virus softwear out there thats any good at all. Would I be better off to go spend 50 bucks on NAV-XP or go with free version no-name brand?

Recommend NAV or paid softwares, if they don't work, return to store. Most of free softwares work like crap.
Keep it safe!

AVG is fine.Wizzy doesn't know what he's talkin' about...many free programs are as good as paid for ones.

I use AVG with no regrets. I recently contracted a worm virus on a machine that only used norton. The virus attacked and made my norton anti virus system inactive. I downloaded AVG and was able to clear up the problem (including making my norton anti virus system operable again). AVG rules!

I run XP home also.My rule of thumb is usually that you get what you apy for. But,AVG isn't a bad av program at all!And it is true that it outperforms some "pay" av programs.I had no problems running it on my system. You could check out NOD32($39.00/year)That's what I use now. It's not bloatware, and it's fast & proven!Solo (srnmicro.com.$25.00/year)is interesting also. But if you do go the "free route"AVG is the only program that I would consider. You could check out the test results on different operating systems at www.virusbtn.com.Regards.JB
