When you say turn the printer on, are you talking about the power switch or using the print command? If it is power, have you tried just leaving the power on all the time when the computer is on? Use a power bar with it and the computer to turn everything off.

Does the printer have some other hardware built in, like card reader(s)?

Did you kill the Found New Hardware wizard each time it pops up? If you did, let it run its course. Otherwise use this lethal weapon to kill it once for all.

XpUser, do Microsoft's PowerToys for XP disble those popups too? If it does, he might want to use it instead of going into the registry.

Yes its when the power is turned on. Yes its on all the time and still happens. It only happens when the power is switched on to make the printer active. I did kill it each time but it still keeps coming back.

Don't kill the Wizard. It is trying to do its job as taught by Uncle Billy. The next time it pops up allow the Wizard to run its course to the end.

Is the printer connected by usb or a parallel cable? If it is with a usb cable, how many usb devices do you have installed? Have you tried using a different usb port?

Have you checked the startup programs using msconfig and tried turning off the Epson Monitoring program?

I do appreciate the interest and answers keep them coming
As you can see I've done that, let it run.. It just sits there doing nothing. It says it cant find the specified file(doesn't say what the file is?!) and does nothing. I've tried ignoring it for an hour or so but it sill sits there behind the other windows doing nothing. And yet teh printer usuinstalled, ist working well apart fromt his blessed baloon and wizard message

Its USB and I've tried different USB connections - all to no avail.

I have taken out Epson 220 details in start up programs via Starter.exe

Again to no avail

If it is a brand new printer, make sure that you uninstall all the printer drivers you have in add/remove programs, including the ones for the old printer. Disconnect the printer and try a system restore to a restore point before you installed the new Epson printer and drivers. After the system restore, check for printers in the control panel to make sure there are no printers listed. Then check in add/remove programs to make sure there are no driver or other printer related programs listed. Then turn the computer off and connect the new printer(make sure the power is on) by using the XP found new hardware wizard when it pops up. Select browse and use the new downloaded drivers you got and saved from the Epson Driver site. Also use a different usb port, or if you have an old parallel cable around try using it, if your motherboard has a parallel port.

I would uninstall all the printers. Then I would reinstall them one at a time, starting with the problem one. After it is working properly, turn off the computer and then install your second printer using the XP found new hardware wizard. If it comes up as a new unidentified usb device, use the device manager to insall the drivers for the highlighted device. HTH

Go here and get devmgr.bat and run it. It will take you to device manager and then in "view" select show hidden devices. Then go to printers and delete all the printers, reboot and let xp reinstall the printer. XP hides devices abd then forgets to tell you about them.

Many thanks all of you. The restore to pre sunday did it and now it all works prpoperly, installed R220 with no extra messages at all. the only hickup was I uininstalled new printer,R220, as instructed, as well as R300 and CX5400 Ok but the restore restored R300 and CX5400. So I uninstalled th R300 and installed the R220 - no problems.
Again, thanks for the help - its most helpful when someone shares the grefe, but frustrating when you are all alone
