OS: WinXP Pro
CPU/Ram: Pentium D/1GB
Product: Sony Vaio
Comment:

I just bought a Sony Vaio desktop pc and I want to reformat with WinXP Pro. When I go through with the winxp format only 131GB of my 250GB hard drive is shown. I know formatting with NTFS takes up room, but does it take up that much room. On my Windows Media Center it is showing 227GB. Is there anything I can do to get more out of my hard drive than 131GB?

Your system needs to be 48 Bit LBA capable, if your XP OS isn't at least SP1 updated, you'll need to do that by simply running Windows update and installing the applicable patches (SP2 & co).

I have SP2 and all of the latest patches, however, it is only showing 127GB from a 250GB hard drive.

The hard drive in my BIOS is 250GB. I was able to resolve by problem. I ran parition magic and I had 104GB of unallocated hard drive space. I created a parition with that and all is well. Thanks for all of the replies.

You could have accomplished the same result from the built-in 'disk management' console in XP had I fully understood you.
