I installed a 3rd H/D and would like to format it to NTFS. It is already formatted to FAT32. When I try to format it in Win Explorer or My Computer is tells me "Windows can not format this drive. Quit any utilities or other programs that are using this drive. and make sure that no window is displaying contents of this drive. The try formatting again"...??? I did try a few other things...with no luck. So can someone pass on the secret to me
Thanks
JB

Go into disk Management, delete te partition. Recreate it and format to NTFS.

To elaborate on StuartS's response, in Disk management you may get a message that the drive is in use, do you wish to proceed anyway. Did you open files on that drive after connecting it?

Many ways to get to disk management.

Go to Start> settings> control panel> administrative tools> computer management> disk management.

You can't format it in Explorer because Windows has put a hidden recycle bin folder on it (RECYCLER), and of course is displaying either the drive contents or drive icon in an explorer window (ref. the error msg you got). Use Disk Manager as advised.

When you were 22 most of this stuff didn't exist. At that time computers were still being run by men in white coats.

I know this becasue when you were 22, I was 23!

That was by bad, sorry.

Hey just FYI, there is a way to format from the Explorer window like you first tried. Right click on the drive from Explorer and choose Format. If it tells you your can't format blah blah blah, just close the Explorer window. The format window will stay open and then try the format option again. it should work this time.
