how do I format my main 20gb hard drive in windows xp pro? (without extra cd or floppy disk)

What do you mean without extra cd or floppy disk? You could format with just the windows xp pro CD itself. Just boot from it and format it, then partition if you want, and then install it. All you need is the xp cd itself.

You cannot format your main hard drive using XP pro if it contains XP pro.In other words XP pro cannot format itself.In order to format i.e remove all data from the disc you need to boot from the XP cd and format/partition from there.
