I Have Two Problems. I Would Like To Format My Computer, But I Have No Floppy Drive. I was under the impression that when you format, everything is gone, and the computer wont recognize anything but the Floppy Drive, Which I use for the CD Rom Driver to install windows XP...is that true? My Second Problem is that when the XP CD IS in the CD Drive, it is bypassed because nothing happens, it just continues with the boot up. I read another message on this site that said to change your bios by pressing F-12 or some other F- button, but nothing happens when I do that.

Trying hitting DEL or F1 (those are the 2 most common buttons) to enter setup when first turning your computer on. Then change the options to make your computer check the cdrom drive before the floppy when booting up. Then you should be able to format your drive in windows xp setup.

1). True. When you format, everything is GONE! NO! The computer recognizes all the devices, if the BIOS is functioning properly, including the CD ROM drive and hard disk. True, you use the CD ROM drive to install XP. You have to have the full version to install to an empty formatted drive, NOT THE UPGRADE VERSION.

2). Hold down the DEL key, this is most common. Enter BIOS and look for BOOT SEQUENCE and make your CD ROM drive the FIRST BOOT DEVICE.

By the way David, its VERY easy to install a floppy disk drive. And floppy disks only cost $10 - $12...not a big deal. You should look into installing one.

Thanks, I Got The Computer To Boot From The CD. But How Do I Get To Command Prompt? (Not The One You Can Use When Windows Is Running)
