I bought a new laptop today and I am at my wits end trying to format the hard drive. My story basically is that I purchased the laptop and it has XP home pre installed( Italian language).I want to delete the XP home (italian) and put my version of XP pro (english) but when I put in the CD (XP pro english) the computer tells me that the XP pro I am trying to install is an older version (Yes its 3 years old but I need my OS in English and I dont want to buy another XP pro). Anyway I am happy to format my hard drive and start a fresh as there is nothing on my hard drive but my laptop doesnt come with a floppy disk so I cant make a bootable disk to do this.I live in Italy and when I purchased the laptop my only choice was the Italian language XP home. I hope this all makes sense. Basically I just want to delete the Italian OS XP home and install my XP pro english without using a bootable floppy as there isnt one on my laptop. cheers and hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction.

can you make a bootable cd using nero and a bootdisk image from bootdisk.com ? if you have nero you jsut select "may bootable cd" and then point it to the a: drive which contains the bootable floppy.

Since the hard disk is already formatted for XP, you don't need to format it again. Remove the Italian files, boot from the English CD and install. Formatting is a peculiar way to erase existing files, in my opinion.

Can't you just change the language and regional settings in Control Panel?

The xp cd is bootable to a fresh format and install. Go in the bios and change the boot sequence to cd or optical device first, reboot and when it ask's do you want to boot from the cd hit enter. You have 5 seconds.

Art_Vandaley,

To help explain, what per is saying.

Have a look, at this MS article. See if that helps, with what you're trying to do. If it does, you're welcome in advance. If it doesn't, just say, and will do something else.

per,

Someone (Nick ;-)), in the WinME forum, thinks I have to many bookmarks/favorites. I guess, I might tend to agree a little bit. Seeing, that I have a ZIP disk full of them :-) But, you never know when you'll need it/one. I guess, that makes me a packrat!

When you can link a page, that's already typed. It saves you/us/me, from having to type it all over again. Hmmm, that last part, what am I saying. We still have to type things over, and over again ;-) You know what I mean ;-)~

Hi, I have followed the instructions to go in the bios and change the boot sequence to cd When I reboot (with my old XP Pro English CD) it does not give me any options. It just starts up normally with the XP Home (Italian). I have also tried Using the Recovery and System CD the laptop came with but the OEM Windows XP home is installed in the System CD so if I try to do a fresh install it will only let me do it (XP home Italian).I'm not sure what else to do now!

You obviously are NOT booting from the CD. Try the boot sequence again and this time SAVE the changes.
