format xp no cd

January 29, 2011 at 07:55:11
Specs: Windows XP

I simply want to format the whole C Drive as I have a new computer and do not want the old one leaving the house with anything on it. However when I try to format either in DOS or from My Computer the system blocks me and won't allow it.

All I want to know is how to format the drive permanently (no reinstall or other OS just format) without the cd?

Do you mean that DBAN didn't work?

BBOY_726 you can't format a drive from the OS. In other words you appear to be loading up windows and then trying to format the drive you just mounted.

Can't be done that way. It would be like you trying to cut off your legs while running a race.

You have to boot up OUTSIDE the OS. Boot floppy disk or bootable cd.

OK I have downloaded DBAN and saved it on a cd. I have an e-machine with Windows XP and I do not know how, once I get into Setup, to get the machine to turn to the E drive to boot up with the CD. Can anyone give step by step on this for me?

You must burn the dban iso file to disk to create a bootable cd, enter bios and make the cd/dvd rom the first boot device, then reboot with the newly created disk in the cd/dvd drive. Copying or saving the downloaded file to disk will not create a boot cd.
