I have Win ME on my computer I am going to put Win XP PRO on it. I have all my pst files saved and any other files I want. How do I get the DOS prompt without getting into Win ME?

After I get the DOS prompt and correct me if I am wrong. I go into BIOS and change the "first boot drive" to "cdrom" and after I get the DOS prompt (which I need to know) I type "format C:" Then insert Win XP PRO into the cdrom and reboot. Follow instructions from XP after that.

Please Help.

Thanks

Change the BIOS boot order (cd-rom first, hard drive C secondly), then boot to your Win XP Pro cd. Select new installation. It will wipe out and format your hard drive for you. Assuming you are only going to run one OS, choose one primary partition. Read your blue XP booklet. Have fun.

You don't have to go to dos and format c: to install XP. Set the first boot device as the cdrom in the bios, put the XP disk in and boot. It will give you the option to delete and create a partion and format or just format an existing partition from the XP disk.

Hi,

If it were me, I would not blow away ME if I had a partition that was empty (or could be made empty) where I could install XP other than the C:\ where the ME currently lives. Why? Because having a dual boot system (ME or XP) can smooth the transition to XP. One or two examples - a program you really want (need) to run simply crashes in XP or where the heck is that file that I really thought I had saved but can't find now. OR - XP was a mistake for me and I want to go back to ME (at least for a while).

Good Luck

If your ME is running fine, then why not just do an upgrade. I did that recently for my wife's computer (win 98 to XP pro)
It was very easy and went fine. After reboot, all the old fines and programs were still there.

There is a selection on the XP cd that checks your present system for compatibility. There were only a couple of minor things that I had to remove before I did the upgrade.
