I doubt if sp 3 is causing problems. If you are getting pop ups, try running anti virus & spyware programs.

If you have an old version of xp, you can integrate service packs using Autostreamer or nlite.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

What "older" version of XP are you talking about? Have you tried uninstalling SP3?

The XP install program allows you to re-partition/format the drive before doing the install. Just select that option.

If the WinXP CD came with SP3 integrated into the disk you can't remove it by convention means.

I don't think that is your problem either.

I don't think SP1 or SP2 are available at the MSoft sites any longer.

Sp2 is still here.

Maybe first trying a 'Repair Install' is best (It will remove any windows updates).
How to do a 'Repair' install

There are ways to save your drivers before a format. But no way to prevent having to reinstall all your programs after a format.
