I'm using a notebook with NO A:\ drive.
It comes with a Recovery CD-ROM that has all the drivers and only allows me to re-install the window XP ONLY without formatting. (That means old user files will be kept and old program files will also be kept). And I DON'T have the original Windows XP setup CD-ROM.I would like to completely format my c:\ drive but when I enter "Command Prompt" from windows. The following pops up:
"Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N)
I then enter "Y"
"Cannot lock the drive, the volume is still in use."
Since I don't have A:\ drive and I DON'T have the Windows XP original CD-ROM, I'm not sure how to format my notebook.
Can any kind person help me? Thanks tonnes.

Do you have access to a computer with a floppy drive and a cd burner? If so you can make a bootable cd using a Win9x bootdisk.
Sandman

I have a cd burner, and I have got a Windows 95 bootup CD.
When I enter the command prompt from this bootup CD, it says:
A:\
then i tried to type format c:
but it won't allow me to, probably because I don't have an A drive. Is that the case? What should I do?

Goto http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnlddisk.htm and download either the "Windows 98 boot disk with Utilities" or the "Windows 98 boot disk with CD-ROM support" bootdisk.
Since you don't have a floppy you will need to extract the .exe file you downloaded using Winzip or Winrar. When you do you will get an error but thats normal. After it's extracted you will end up with a .ima file. Open your burning program and make a bootable cd using the .ima file you just extracted.
If you don't understand anything I said post back and I'll try to explain better. Also what program do you use to burn cd's?
Sandman

I try to open the windows98 bootup file using Winzip, but it won't allow me to, unless I re-name the file to a zip. Do I proceed?

Yes if that will let you extract the .ima file go ahead and do it. I use Winrar to extract it. If Winzip still won't extract it you can get a demo of Winrar from www.rarlab.com It will extract it.
Sandman

Thanks, I got it extracted. Now gonna burn that, what should I do after I've burnt the IMA file?

Do you have special meaning when you said "Make a bootable CD" coz I just burnt it and treat it as a data CD.
What should I do know after I've make a CD

First make sure you select bootable cd. If the wizard open when you launch Nero close it and select CD-ROM (boot). Click where is says image file and then browse to the .ima file. Leave the other options like they are. Now you should have a bootable Win98 cd.
After you've got it bunrt just boot the cd and format normally (format c:). If the drive won't format you'll need to run fdisk first to delete the non dos partition. Then use fdisk to recreate a primary dos partition. If your hard drive in formatted as ntfs you will have to use fdisk.
Sandman

I've successfully create a bootable CD.
When I run the CD under F12 (Enter boot manual), the following error occured:Nero Boot-Loader V3.0
Disk I/O error
Replace the disk, then press any key.I've check the disk is OK, what's the problem?

I wanna ask 1 thing,
you said "Click where is says image file and then browse to the .ima file. Leave the other options like they are."
After that do I just click on "burn cd" or need to drag that IMA file again to the side where files will be burnt?

You don't need to drag the ima file in to the compilation. Just select it as the image file and burn the cd.
Which disk did you download? I want to try it myself and see if I get that error. There might be one setting thats needs to be changed but I won't know for sure until I try it.
Sandman

Thanks Sandman,
I've downloaded:
Windows 98 boot disk with CD-ROM support (DOS/Win98)
Same as the Windows 98 boot disk with utilities, but with CD-ROM support from Oak Technologies.

I've tested it and its working as it should. Make sure where is says "kind of emulation:" is set to Floppy emulation 1.44MB. Or uncheck enable expert setting. Both ways work here.
If you have a cdrw disk you can use it so you won't waste anymore cd's. Just make sure to disable Incd (if its installed) first.
