boot up with a win98 boot disk (Bootdisk.com), and then type in "format c: /q" and hit enter. This will do a quick format on the drive. Then, put the win2k cd in the cd drive, and boot with that. Follow the prompts from there.

Find out who manufactured your hard drive and download THEIR UTILITIES DISK. iTS MOST LIKELY EITHER A SEAGATE OR A WESTERN DIGITAL. tHEN SAVE IT TO A FLOPPY. cLICK ON wRITE ZERO'S TO DRIVE(fORMAT) THEN RESTART WITH YOUR WIN 2000 CD IN THE CDDRIVE. iTS MOST LIKELY EITHER A SEAGATE OR A WESTERN DIGITAL.

hey kevin, you should watch that caps lock key man... lol.

It doesn't pay to do the low level format. It' s a waste of time when you are just going to install an os again. If he was going to get rid of the drive, then I would say yah, write 0s to the drive. But since he's going to install win2k, a quick format and he's on his way.

Btw... ibm, fujitsu, samsung, maxtor, etc. There are quite a few makers of drives, and sometimes you don't even know what you're getting when you buy one of those bargain drives from best buy for $25 after rebate. Seagate and WD aren't the only boys in the game.
