It might seems like a lazy question but i was wondering.......

After re-installing windows from scratch on my friend's computer, why do i have to write the "http" to acces any URL in IE? (did not tried Firefox-sorry)

I used to be able to enter www.website.com to access a site but now, i'm force to write http://www.website.com

I know it doesn't take very long to push 7 keystrokes but Why ?

Why was it necessary to do a reinstall in the 1st place?

Are you running IE6 or IE7? Just a guess - check the AutoComplete settings under Internet Options

He (my friend) caught a virus that makes the boot sector of his HD unusable.

It's IE 6.

And AutoComplete is on.

Any reason why you (he) doesn't want IE7? If not, try installing it via Windows Update.

No particular reason, but it was working like a charm on his old setup. Installing a more recent software might solve the problem but it's a problem that shouldn't be there in the first place.

Well, we have no idea how you went about reinstalling Windows...whether you wiped out all existing partitions & repartitioned, whether you used NTFS or FAT32, whether you installed all the necessary drivers, updated XP using Windows Update, what 3rd party apps you installed, etc. If you feel the system is running OK other than this "HTTP" issue, I suggest you try updating to IE7
