Hi lurkswithin and tufenuf,

Thank you for responding. I apologize for taking so long to respond.

Lurkswithin: I am having problems with my HP psc1350 all in one printer. When I click on System Diagnostics then the devices tab it locks up and sends an error message to MS. I wrote to HP and they told me to resolve the issue that I need to uninstall the USB port and reinstall it. They said to start my computer in safe mode, go into device manager, double click on Universal Serial Bus controllers, right click the device listed USB and uninstall and click ok for removal. Im to repeat the steps untill all the devices under USB are uninstalled.

However, I cannot use the F8 key, or im not timing it right, to access safe mode. I tried another suggestion I found on this forum and when I did that (I cant remember, it was something about clicking on the diagnostics mode button) and when I did that there was nothing in device manager. I dont know whats in the HP devices tab, I was just curious one day and wanted to see. But I cant.

tufenuf: I saved the site you linked me to and will check it out. thanx

I want to thank both of you for your help and anyone else who reads this that has helped me in the past. I really appreciate the time you take to help people in this forum. I have been a member for a while and since joining, I have learned new things. I like to read posts, I cant help anyone, but I like to read them in case i know someone with a similar problem, and I tell them about this forum.

I am still having the IE problem, but have seen that there are lots of other people with a similar problem. I have done the suggestions to other people and it hasnt worked for me. Some days IE will run fine without the help of AOL and most days not. There are just certain sites it wont let me access.

Anyway, Thank you for your help in my times of need. Im sure ill be back. LOL

Well....I have a couple questions...

If I d/c on my network connections on the desktop...there is nothing listed in there...should there be?

In the windows firewall (sp2)(i have it disabled) but under the exceptions tab I have the following checked....http, remote assistance and windows messenger...should these all be checked?

Under Network connections in control panel under local area connections under the advanced tab should I have the enable EEE 802 etc box checked? I currently have it unchecked.

In control panel under Network Connections, MSN Explorer/properties/advanced tab ...should the box that reads: Allow other network users to connect thru this computers internet connection be checked or unchecked. I currently have it unchecked.

One last thing...I think I accidentally set up a home network connection and shouldnt have. Is there any to check to see if I did and If I did can I delete the connection? I was running the setup a network connection and I believe I set the wrong thing up.

Thanking you in advance,
Nanette

First...A BIG THANK YOU for the compliment!
The F8 key sometimes just doesn't want to work on some systems. To be perfectly frank, I am not sure if it is because of some tweak or what. Some times it just doesn't want to work. As soon as you reboot you should start toggling the F* key to get to the "start-up page" so as to enter "safe mode". If it boots to windows screen then you missed it.
The issue as to why HP wanted you into safe mode to uninstall the USB controller is puzzling though. You should not have to be in safe mode to remove it(uninstall).
R click my computer icon and open properties then click onhardware tab, then device manager and when the new window pops up scroll down to the USB controller and click the x box to expand it.There will be quite a few selections but what you need to do is double click each item and when it pops up select the driver tab and then select uninstall. It will prompt you that you are about to remove this item...just ok and go to the next one. You should previously unplug any usb devices that you have. Once you have uninstalled all the drivers just reboot and windows will reinstall them. As soon as they are finished reinstalling go to windows update and get any newer versions. Then you should be able to reinstall your printer and get it updated through HP.
to try to answer your other ??'s
1) "If I d/c on my network connections on the desktop...there is nothing listed in there...should there be?"
only if you are on a network and there is another computer actually turned on
2)"In the windows firewall (sp2)(i have it disabled) but under the exceptions tab I have the following checked....http, remote assistance and windows messenger...should these all be checked?"
Turn the firewall back on unless you have another firewall that you are using. If you want to be helped through your desktop by someone in another place then leave the remote asst.checked....messenger if you use it?if not disable it
3)"Under Network connections in control panel under local area connections under the advanced tab should I have the enable EEE 802 etc box checked? I currently have it unchecked."
sorry I don't know about this one I don't have it.
4)"In control panel under Network Connections, MSN Explorer/properties/advanced tab ...should the box that reads: Allow other network users to connect thru this computers internet connection be checked or unchecked. I currently have it unchecked."
it should only be checked if you have a network setup that uses your computer as a server, instaed of using a router.
5)"One last thing...I think I accidentally set up a home network connection and shouldnt have. Is there any to check to see if I did and If I did can I delete the connection? I was running the setup a network connection and I believe I set the wrong thing up."
start>control panel>network connections and look for three things. 1)internet connection
2)network wizard 3)new connection wizard.Anything else shows a network connection and can be left or deleted even if not on a network. They don't hurt anything
good luck

lurkswithin,

Thank you for your response, and your quite welcome :)

I will keep you posted on the HP printer thing. I made sure of the things you said so hopefully that will be ok. I have a firewall thru McAfee that I use. I heard the firewall that came with SP2 isnt a very good one.

Thanx again,
Nanette

Best of luck Nanette. I have the same all-in-one and have tried the uninstall thingy using all 3 USB ports on my laptop and it makes no difference. I have just given up with HP. If you do get some results please post back. I'll be watching and waiting.
All the best
