If you have Sun java. Man I guess Knoppix is safe for now.

So in my terms it's a diff operating system right? Sorry for my dumbness but I've never heard of it.. and was maybe looking for another operating system for my mom's comp. Thanks again for replying!

You get to try Linux without installing Linux. Which is ok, and so is windows.
Once its loaded into the ram, the cd rom never runs again, because theres 1.5 gig ram on this board, less(?) ram and the cd rom runs more often. Knoppix will use a swap area of some part of the harddrive it claims.
My guess is when IE7 comes out with the new print finction, we'll will get spam on our printers.

Ohhh ok.. I get it now. Not to overwhelm you with q's but in your opinion is Linux better in everyway possible than Windows.. or what do you think? I've heard the term "linux" occasionally and even looked into it once before but I don't know the first thing about it so I decided to leave it alone. But any info your willing to give me is much appreciated, or if you wish to talk on a messenger service about this just let me know. Thanks again!

I wouldn't call either one "better", although overall, Linux is less buggy and more secure.
I use Linux at home, because I do a lot of photo & video editing, web design, cd-ripping/burning, and I surf the web a lot.
For those purposes Linux is better because the Linux applications I use to do those jobs are better than their Windows counterparts (and they don't cost anything). Also, my wife is not too computer-savvy and she finds the KDE interface (a gui provided with Linux) easier to get around in than Windows. At work I use Windows XP because I use Autocad and Solidworks, and they only run on Windows. It's also simpler to implement network sharing since everyone else is on Windows too. You'll also find that many hardware vendors will supply drivers for Windows and completely neglect Linux.
That said, I use Crossover Office on my Linux box to run Windows applications and use VMware on my Windows workstation to run a Linux virtual machine.
The key thing here is to pick the right tool for the job. After all, the computer is for running applications.

Ok that info helps me out alot. If I may tell you my whole situation with hopes of not boring you senceless lol. Ok here goes..I consider myself very computer savvy but definately not an expert. My mom on the other hand is a complete novice. Her computer is 4 years old..I can only offer these specs about it HP Pavilion; bought with Windows ME installed; total physical memory 119.45 MB; total virtual memory 2.00 GB; Page file space 1.88 GB; and a 1000 MHZ processor. Now.. looking at those specs I would say that her computer isnt the best my far but can handle it's own with small programs open at once. I don't know much about "you need this much memory or WHOA you have no memory". Here's my dilemma she likes to play alot of games and web surf. Recently I put windows XP on her computer.. somewhat buggy and sluggish HOWEVER to me it seemed to be much less buggy with errors and an overall better running and looking interface. After noticing the slower performance with Windows XP installed I researched it and found out that XP in all it's glory is a computer hog IE using alot more RAM and resources all together. She's been getting alot of errors while playing her games and I have done everything I know to do or how to do to try and fix it but to no avail?? Given those specs.. and the trouble I've had in the past week should I try Linux? Or should I try and go back to XP again? Sorry for rambling..once again any comment is very much appreciated. THANKS!!

Boy I'm scared now, maybe I'll have to go back to IE! NOT!!!!
If you read that artical, the part about running Firefox as root. Any Linux user knows not to do anything but administative procedures when you are logged in as root. I don't have java it is the devil, just like macromedia.

Let mom use knoppix, if she dont like, no harm done really. Comes with mozilla and firefox and kanquerer browsers. Games to. Linux seems to run better on machines that dont quite handle XP. Theres a learning curve, but its easy.

Ok.. I went to this website http://www.knoppix.org/ english version. I'm not really worried about the learning curve.. however I just wish I had more of a guide.. is there any site you can recommend about this particular version of Linux? Thanks again for all your help!

Once you download the 3.7 iso, (3.8 should be posted soon), burn to cd. Stick in your usual rom. Set "boot from cdrom" either in bios or by holding F8 when machine first comes up. When knoppix is done loading the Konquerer browser will start up.

Can you send me the link to download Knoppix version 3.7 or whatever the newest version is?? I can only seem to find version 3.6.. thanks again!

Ok thanks alot I'm downloading it right now.. I'll come back if I need anything else. Thanks for all your help!!

ashli, win xp is a resource hog, but that's because it comes with all the bells & whistles on by default. You need to trim all the visual eye candy down. The computer specs aren't so bad. The problem your mom is having with games is probably because of compatibility problems (older games based on dos/win98/winme). Win XP doesn't sit on a DOS kernel.
Linux: Pro's: Free, different varieties/distributions, control over operating system, open source.
Con's: You need to learn commands like how to mount drives, if something needs adjusting, you need to dive into the config files, not everything will run on it, etc. Each to his own...I was working on a unix machine before I even owned my first computer (used one of those CRT terminals that could only do one thing...dial out with the 300 bps modem lol). I'd connect to a university's system and work around there. That's why I like linux...it's similar to my first OS.
I'm not sure why you're looking into linux to solve your mom's computer games. You should either go back to Windows ME, or try to fix up Windows XP (Adding a stick of ram to her pc would help immensely). People also put linux on computers with little resources, and just turn them into servers.
Going to linux is like learning a new language...installing programs, updating the kernel on a regular basis, etc. will take time getting used to. I'm not sure your mom would be willing to give up windows' "point and click" philosophy.

OK, an article that says Firefox isn't perfect and omits mentioning even a single IE vulnerability. Quite the in-depth comparison you found there.
