Hi guys,

My problem is simple. I have an external Hard Disk with many folders. Suddenly, some of these folders appeared as files with unknown files icon, I can't access them, I can't see what's inside of they, their size is 32KB, yet, the hard disk shows that the free space is the same as when the folders were there.

I did try to recover the files using EASEUS data recovery and I can see the files and I can recover them, but most are not working.

I hope that you help me. I made sure that I didn't use the hard disk, I did not add, copy or delete anything from it, I did not defrag or do any operation that would add a single bit that was not originally there.

I appreciate all your help. Please reply fast

Hopefully you have backups of these files.

Sounds like disk corruption which means you need to run chkdsk /r on the drive.

This will correct the corrupted file system but you may loose access to some files/folders damaged by this corruption that is now fixed by check disk.

This is why I asked if you have backups of these files.

Hi Wanderer,

I don't have any backups as this is a work hard disk and I had it for 1 week only. I feel so horrible I don't have the backup.

Please let me know, in case I run the chkdsk /r on the external hard disk, will that eliminate all possibility to recover files? what are the chances I still can recover them? everything seems exactly like it was, folder names, used hard disk space, free space, but the folders look like unknown files. I'd really appreciate your help.

You can try one of the file recovery programs on the web but what you describe sounds like disk corruption.

As a test put the drive in a different system and see if it appears the same.

Hi Again,

It shows the same in another computer, folders with unknown files icon.

Can you please tell me if chkdsk will help without damaging the situation?

We can't tell you that. It 'could' make things worse (if that's possible). A File Recovery program is your best shot, although it may be a waste of time, since the one you tried failed.
Here are a couple more that you could try:

PC Inspector (freeware)
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pcinsp...

Zero assumption Recovery
http://www.z-a-recovery.com
The demo is limited
It will only recover 'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs.

I would have to agree. Data recovery is your best bet. Failing that chkdsk may be your last hope but if the file system is very corrupted your files won't be accessable after chkdsk.
